Florida Golf, Privately Held.
In 1984, developer Stan Olsen asked Tom Fazio to build the best golf courses in the world on a stretch of rolling sand hills and abandoned limestone quarries in Lecanto, 15 miles from the Gulf. Fazio took him at his word. The Quarry opened in 1987 and spent two decades on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Courses, reaching as high as No. 24. The Ranch followed in 1997 and the Highlands nine in 1999: 45 holes by a single architect, on ground few golfers would associate with Florida.
Black Diamond Ranch remains private, with membership by invitation only. For four days, the group plays it as its members do.
